Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth appears likely to suit up for Sunday’s Week 6 contest against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers despite a late addition to the injury report.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that the team remains optimistic Freiermuth will play after he was listed as questionable with a calf injury on Saturday.
The 27-year-old was a surprise addition to the report just before the game, creating brief concern given his recent production.
Through five games, Freiermuth has hauled in 19 receptions for 169 yards and a team-high four touchdowns.
That touchdown total already matches his entire 2025 output, and he is coming off a standout performance in Pittsburgh’s 34-22 win over the Colts in which he scored twice.
Under head coach Mike McCarthy and quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Freiermuth has seen an expanded role compared with the previous season, logging a higher snap share and functioning as a reliable red-zone and intermediate target.
His potential availability carries extra weight because of injuries elsewhere in the receiving corps.
Wide receivers Michael Pittman Jr. (foot), Roman Wilson (finger), and Ben Skowronek (calf) are all unavailable, leaving the Steelers thin behind DK Metcalf, who was cleared after dealing with an illness earlier in the week.
In that environment, Freiermuth offers a proven outlet who can line up inline or in the slot and create mismatches against linebackers and safeties.
Should he be limited or unable to go, teammates Darnell Washington and Robert Tonyan would be expected to absorb a larger share of the snaps and targets.
The Steelers enter the matchup at Raymond James Stadium with a 3-2 record and a chance to improve to 4-2 against a struggling 1-4 Buccaneers squad.
Pittsburgh has leaned on its tight ends during stretches of the early season, particularly as the wide receiver room has been depleted, and Freiermuth’s presence would help maintain continuity in an offense still building chemistry between Rodgers and his targets.
While the calf issue remains a late-week variable and his status will ultimately be confirmed closer to kickoff, the early indication from team sources points toward him being available.
For a Pittsburgh offense looking to capitalize on its favorable matchup and continue its recent scoring output, having one of its most productive pass-catchers on the field would represent a meaningful boost heading into the second half of the season.
