As the Pittsburgh Steelers navigate the Aaron Rodgers era, one big unknown looms over the franchise: what happens at quarterback when Rodgers’ time in the Steel City ends?

Whether the future Hall of Famer decides to ride off into retirement after this season or plays elsewhere in 2026, Pittsburgh knows it must secure the long-term answer under center. With the team likely picking somewhere in the teens next April, the 2026 draft class could provide the perfect opportunity.

And right now, one prospect’s name is attached to the black and gold more than any other: Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson.

Mock draft season is in full swing, and it seems like every projection sends the Crimson Tide signal-caller to the Steelers. The latest comes from The Athletic’s Dane Brugler, who also pairs Simpson with Pittsburgh in his newest first-round forecast.

“Even if his inexperience is an understandable concern, Simpson processes quickly, negotiates pressure and gives his receivers chances to make plays,” Brugler wrote.

“It wouldn’t be surprising if he returns to Tuscaloosa, but there will be several interested teams in the top half of Round 1 if he declares.”

This fall marks Simpson’s debut as Alabama’s full-time starter, yet he’s already flashed the poise and play-making ability that have scouts buzzing. He’s delivered in crunch time all season, hitting big throws and, when absolutely necessary, using his legs to pick up critical yards without overexposing himself to hits.

For a Steelers franchise famous for quarterback continuity, Simpson fits the mold of a developmental prospect who wouldn’t be rushed. If Rodgers returns for another year or the team brings back Mason Rudolph as a bridge, a seasoned veteran could hold the job while Simpson refines his game behind the scenes.

Then, when the time is right, the keys get handed over.

Or, if the former five-star recruit arrives more polished than expected, Pittsburgh could simplify the offense early and let him grow on the job.

Either scenario works. What’s clear is that the Steelers are entering a new chapter at the game’s most important position, and a growing number of draft experts believe Ty Simpson could be the one to turn the page.
