The Pittsburgh Steelers and cornerback Joey Porter Jr. remain at a contractual standoff with the 2026 regular season only days away, leaving the team and one of its homegrown defensive pieces in a familiar but increasingly urgent holding pattern.
Porter is heading into the final season of his rookie deal, and despite movement around the league on comparable players, Pittsburgh has not reached an extension.
General manager Omar Khan has reiterated the organization’s long-standing policy of shutting down negotiations once the games begin, which means any resolution would have to happen before Sunday’s opener against the Atlanta Falcons at Acrisure Stadium.
NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, speaking Tuesday on the Pat McAfee Show, declined to write the situation off entirely.
“Until the season starts, I will not give up hope that this can be done. … This one is at least worth keeping an eye on,” Rapoport said.
He noted that “some conversations” have taken place recently, even while acknowledging it still does not “seem like the team and player are far along contract wise.”
The gap appears rooted in valuation. The Steelers see Porter as a productive starter who has yet to earn a Pro Bowl nod through three seasons and therefore does not warrant a deal that would reset the cornerback market.
Porter, now 26, has watched other players at the position land sizable contracts this offseason and is positioning himself accordingly. His 2025 numbers included 52 tackles, 14 pass deflections and one interception across 14 games.
That followed a 2024 campaign in which he posted career highs of 70 combined tackles (53 solo), two tackles for loss, seven deflections and another pick. As a rookie in 2023 he recorded 43 tackles after the Steelers selected him in the second round out of Penn State.
The family history adds another layer. Porter is the son of former Steelers linebacker Joey Porter Sr., a four-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion whose popularity in Pittsburgh made the younger Porter’s arrival feel like a homecoming.
A trade or eventual departure would carry extra weight for a fan base that expected the son to build on the father’s legacy. If neither side moves, the most likely outcome is that Porter plays out 2026 and the relationship ends afterward, though Rapoport’s comments leave a narrow window open this week.
Whether that window closes before kickoff will determine if Porter lines up in black and gold as a pending free agent or as a newly paid cornerstone.
