Seattle Seahawks Hit With Yet Another Crushing Injury Update

The Seattle Seahawks will take the field Sunday against the Washington Commanders without two of the players they have counted on most in the secondary.

According to the team’s final injury report before Week 3, starting safeties Julian Love and Ty Okada have both been ruled out, leaving Seattle thin at a position that has already been battered this season.

Quarterback Sam Darnold is expected to return from a glute injury, which is welcome news on offense. The defensive picture is less encouraging. Love has been dealing with a calf issue and sat out practice Thursday and Friday.

Rather than wait to see how the veteran responded over the weekend, the staff shut him down for the trip to Washington. Okada’s absence is less sudden but no less costly.

A hamstring problem that first surfaced in the summer has already kept him out of the first two games. He did not practice Friday either, and with the four-game window to get him on the field without using injured reserve shrinking, another missed Sunday is a clear setback.

The safety room has been short-handed since training camp. Rookie Bud Clark suffered a season-ending ankle injury in the summer, and versatile defender Nick Emmanwori sat out the opener while recovering from his own ankle problem. That left Love and Okada as the primary options.

Emmanwori is available this week, but he is not a one-for-one replacement. Seattle uses him across the defense, which means the traditional safety snaps are likely to fall to AJ Finley and Rodney Thomas II.

The club may also elevate D’Anthony Bell or Maxen Hook from the practice squad to add another body behind them. Defensive tackle Brandon Pili is listed as questionable and could be a game-time decision.

Losing two starters at the same position is never ideal, especially this early in the year. The schedule offers a modest cushion. Washington will be without starting quarterback Jayden Daniels, which should limit how much the Commanders can exploit Seattle’s depleted back end.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET, and the Seahawks, if they handle the personnel shuffle, will be favored to improve to 3-0. That expectation does not erase the larger concern.

Depth at safety was already thin, and another week without Love and Okada tests how quickly younger and less experienced players can settle into starting roles.

For a defense that wants to stay aggressive, communication and assignment discipline will matter as much as talent. Finley and Thomas II have to play clean football. Emmanwori’s flexibility can still help disguise coverages, but the unit cannot afford blown alignments against even a backup quarterback.

Seattle’s coaching staff will spend the next two days simplifying the plan and leaning on veterans elsewhere on defense to keep the secondary from becoming the story of the afternoon.

If the Seahawks get the win, the conversation will quickly turn to whether Love and Okada can return in Week 4. If they do not, the injury report from Friday will look like the first real warning that this secondary is running on fumes.
