The Seattle Mariners have added depth to their pitching ranks by signing right-hander Scott Effross to a minor-league contract.
The deal, confirmed through league transactions, comes shortly after the veteran was released by the Detroit Tigers’ Triple-A affiliate and immediately places him with the Tacoma Rainiers.
Effross arrives with a résumé that includes significant major league time and a notable chapter in the Bronx.
Before his brief stop in the Tigers organization, he spent three seasons with the New York Yankees, part of a four-year major-league career that has seen him log 85.1 innings with a solid 3.59 ERA, 88 strikeouts, and a 1.148 WHIP.
His career ERA+ of 118 reflects the kind of reliable relief work that once made him a useful piece in high-leverage situations.
That said, the most recent stretch of his career has been uneven. In 2025 with the Yankees, Effross struggled across 10.2 innings, allowing 10 earned runs on 16 hits while recording only six strikeouts.
Those results contributed to his departure from New York and limited opportunities elsewhere. In 2026 he pitched exclusively in the minors, posting a 4.19 ERA over 38.2 innings with Toledo before the club released him.
For the Mariners, the signing represents a low-risk opportunity to evaluate a pitcher who still possesses big-league experience and the ability to miss bats when his stuff is sharp.
Tacoma provides a familiar environment for a player looking to reestablish rhythm and confidence.
Should Effross demonstrate the command and effectiveness that defined earlier stretches of his career, he could force his way into consideration for a call-up as Seattle navigates the second half of the season and beyond.
