The San Jose Sharks placed right wing Patrick Giles on waivers Sunday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reported.
Giles, 26, had been listed on non-roster injured reserve after an upper-body injury from the preseason.
Club officials expected him to rejoin the American Hockey League once he was cleared to play.
Players of his age and service time must clear waivers before an assignment to the minors can take effect. If no team claims him, Giles is expected to report to the San Jose Barracuda.
The Chevy Chase, Maryland, native went undrafted after four seasons at Boston College, where he was a teammate of Matt Boldy. He signed with the Charlotte Checkers on an AHL tryout in 2022 and later earned an entry-level deal with the Florida Panthers.
Giles appeared in 187 regular-season games with Charlotte before making his NHL debut with Florida in October 2024. He played nine games for the Panthers that season without recording a point.
Florida traded him to San Jose on March 5, 2025, in exchange for goaltender Vitek Vanecek.
Giles scored four goals in eight games with the Barracuda after the deal, an unusual offensive burst for a 6-foot-5, 220-pound forward known more for defense.
He also appeared in eight NHL games with the Sharks in 2024-25 and scored one goal.
Last season he skated in three games for San Jose and recorded one assist, his second career NHL point.
In the AHL he posted 10 goals and 14 assists for 24 points in 67 games with the Barracuda, both career highs in assists and points.
The Barracuda finished 40-28-2-2 for 84 points and lost in the qualifying round of the Calder Cup playoffs.
Giles signed a two-year, two-way contract extension with San Jose on May 5. He has 20 career NHL games and two points, all without a penalty minute.
