The San Francisco 49ers received an unexpected injury update on veteran wide receiver Mike Evans Thursday as they prepare for a Monday night matchup against the Washington Commanders.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that Evans sat out practice dealing with Achilles soreness on top of the fractured ribs he has been managing for more than two weeks.

The Achilles issue marks a new development for the 33-year-old, though early indications suggest it is not a significant concern at this stage.

Evans has continued to play through the rib injury without missing a game, and he delivered his strongest performance yet in a 49ers uniform during last weekend’s 32-29 road win over the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.

He caught seven passes for 113 yards and a touchdown, providing a much-needed spark for an offense that has navigated significant attrition in the receiving corps.

That production came after Evans was carted off the field in Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals with the rib/oblique problem, yet he returned the following week and has not sat out since.

The 49ers’ Monday night schedule works in Evans’ favor, offering additional recovery time before the team hosts Washington. Friday and Saturday practices will likely serve as the clearest indicators of his availability.

Shanahan has previously described the rib injury as something that could linger if Evans keeps playing through it, so the coaching staff will monitor how the combination of issues responds to rest and treatment.

Evans joined the 49ers this offseason after spending the first 12 seasons of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he earned six Pro Bowl selections and won a Super Bowl.

Through five games in San Francisco he has recorded 24 receptions for 326 yards and three touchdowns. His presence has been especially valuable given the thin depth chart around him.

Ricky Pearsall, Christian Kirk, De’Zhaun Stribling, and DeMarcus Robinson are all sidelined, while Deebo Samuel is expected to miss multiple weeks with a hamstring injury sustained against Seattle.

Kirk did open his practice window Thursday, which could eventually ease the burden, but for the immediate future Evans and Brandin Cooks form the primary receiving tandem. The 49ers have already shown resilience by securing a hard-fought victory over Seattle despite the injuries.

Evans’ ability to produce at a high level while managing fractured ribs underscores his toughness, yet the new Achilles soreness introduces another variable heading into a short-week preparation.

With no game until Monday, the organization has a bit more flexibility than a typical Sunday slate would allow.

Whether Evans can continue serving as a focal point of the offense will depend on how his body responds over the next few days of practice.

For now, the team remains optimistic that the Achilles issue will not force him to the sideline, but the situation bears watching as the 49ers try to build on their recent success.
