The San Francisco 49ers signed wide receive Brandin Cooks to their practice squad on Sept. 22. They then elevated him to the active roster for Week 4. We now know what the contract implications look like.

The contract, as charted by Spotrac, is a one-year, $2 million pact pays him a $1.5 million base, roughly $11,764 for each game he is active, and another half-million in incentives if he reaches 35 catches or 500 yards.

For a receiver who has already banked more than $126 million and logged nearly 10,000 yards, the money is a footnote.

For the 49ers, it is a cheap way to buy a specific skill set their offense has been short of since the receiving room started thinning out.

Kyle Shanahan’s attack has never needed a volume target so much as a receiver who can win on the boundary and threaten the deep middle without the offense having to manufacture the look.

Cooks built his reputation on that. He is one of only two players in league history to post a 1,000-yard season with four different teams, doing it twice in New Orleans and once each with the Rams, Patriots, and Texans.

That résumé is less about star power than about adaptability. He has run vertical routes in Sean Payton’s scheme, stretched the field next to Cooper Kupp in Los Angeles, and operated as a complementary piece in New England.

Shanahan’s motion-heavy, play-action system asks for the same thing: a veteran who can line up outside, take the top off a coverage, and force a safety to honor him so the intermediate concepts can work underneath.

The timing fits the roster as much as the scheme. San Francisco entered the fall already leaning on an older skill group, and injuries have made the wide receiver room thinner still.

Demarcus Robinson’s high ankle sprain, along with other absences at the position, left Brock Purdy short of reliable options who have actually done this at the NFL level.

Cooks will not replace a featured receiver. At 33, coming off a 2025 season split between New Orleans and Buffalo in which he caught 24 passes for 279 yards, he is no longer a weekly 80-yard threat.

What he still offers is a known quantity on third down and in the red zone, a player who has scored 60 career touchdowns and who understands how to settle into the soft spots of zone coverage when the shot play is not there.

The incentive structure quietly reinforces that role. Thirty-five receptions and 500 yards are not star thresholds; they are the production of a useful rotational piece over a full season. If Cooks hits them, the 49ers will have gotten a functional outside receiver for a little more than the veteran minimum, and Purdy will have had another body who can run a go route without the playbook having to be rewritten around him.

If he does not, the cap charge stays near $1.7 million and the team moves on in March, when Cooks is scheduled to hit unrestricted free agency.

Shanahan has said for years that he has been a fan of Cooks. The appeal is practical. A Shanahan offense lives on timing, on the quarterback’s confidence that the receiver will be where the route says he will be, and on the defense’s uncertainty about whether that route ends at 12 yards or 40. Cooks has spent a decade being that kind of problem for secondaries. On a deal this small, even a partial return to that form is enough to matter.
