Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea has requested a trade after contract extension talks stalled, and the San Francisco 49ers rank among his potential destinations.
Trace Moustakas of Chat Sports has picked the 49ers as the best possible destination for Vea before the 2026 season arrives.
Vea, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, is in the final season of a four-year, $71 million deal. He is scheduled to earn $18 million in 2026.
ESPN senior NFL writer Jeremy Fowler reported that negotiations have stalled.
“Per a source, talks with Tampa Bay have gone ‘nowhere,’ and the $18 million due to Vea in 2026 is below market value for a two-time Pro Bowler who still commands double-teams,” Fowler said.
The Athletic’s Ted Nguyen reported Monday, citing a source, that Vea wants to go to a California team or the Raiders. That list includes the 49ers, Los Angeles Rams, Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders.
The 49ers spent significant resources this offseason to bolster their defensive front. They acquired defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa in a trade from the Dallas Cowboys and selected Romello Height in the third round of the 2026 NFL draft.
Despite those moves, San Francisco finished last in the NFL with just 20 sacks during the 2025 season. Key edge rushers Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams both suffered ACL tears that year.
Fowler noted the 49ers’ ongoing need to generate pressure.
“Manufacturing a pass rush is a must (the 49ers were last in the NFL with 20 sacks last season), and Vea has 11.5 sacks over the past two seasons,” Fowler wrote.
Vea recorded 4.5 sacks last season alone. That total would have led the entire San Francisco defense in 2025.A move to the 49ers would also represent a homecoming. The 31-year-old was born in Stanford, California, and attended high school in nearby Milpitas, roughly 14 minutes from Levi’s Stadium.
Vea was selected 12th overall by Tampa Bay in the 2018 NFL draft out of Washington. In eight seasons with the Buccaneers, he has appeared in 112 games, recording 256 tackles, 79 quarterback hits, 35 sacks, nine passes defensed, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. He also earned a Super Bowl ring with the team.
His current salary-cap hit sits at approximately $22.19 million. At age 31 and with only one year remaining on his contract, any acquiring team would need to weigh the cost against his remaining prime.
San Francisco currently holds one of the largest pools of available salary-cap space in the league, giving the franchise flexibility to absorb Vea’s contract or pursue an extension.
Adding the interior force could also help the 49ers keep pace with NFC West rivals. The Rams have made aggressive moves this offseason, while the Seattle Seahawks remain defending conference contenders.
Whether Tampa Bay ultimately agrees to a trade remains uncertain. Multiple teams figure to inquire, but Vea’s geographic preference keeps the 49ers firmly in the conversation.
