San Antonio Spurs Victor Wembanyama Makes More NBA History

The 2023-24 NBA season was a historic one for San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft wasted no time making his presence felt in the league, as he may have exceeded even the wild expectations that were placed on him.

It seemed every night that he took the court he was accomplishing something that hasn’t been seen since Wilt Chamberlain. Or putting up stat lines as dominant as Shaquille O’Neal. After one season, Victor Wembanyama has rewritten the NBA record book and is only scratching the surface of his potential.

He ran away with the Rookie of the Year award, dominating both ends of the court. Victor Wembanyama averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.2 steals and 3.6 blocks in only 29.7 minutes per game. The blocks led the NBA and he was also the best off-the-dribble 3-point shooter in the league.

Someone at that size with that offensive skill is truly mind-boggling. Opponents have little hope to stop him, you can only hope to contain him. More often than not, you are going to just have to tip your cap and go back on offense, where figuring out a way to beat him is even more challenging.

Despite being a rookie, Victor Wembanyama was a finalist for the Defensive Player of the Year award. He finished second to Rudy Gobert of the Minnesota Timberwolves, as that award will eventually be his and likely multiple times.

On Tuesday, the San Antonio Spurs phenom made even more NBA history. He was named as one of the players to make the All-Defensive Team first team. That makes him the first rookie ever to receive that recognition.

As shared by ESPN, it was nearly a clean sweep for Victor Wembanyama. Out of the 99 ballots that were placed, he appeared on the first team on 98 of them. Gobert was the only unanimous selection. Those two were joined by Bam Adebayo, Herb Jones and Anthony Davis.
