The Las Vegas Raiders’ wide receiver group has shown flashes of promise during training camp practices, yet questions linger about whether the unit has enough proven depth to carry the team through a full season.
Tre Tucker and Jalen Nailor currently look like the top two options for starting roles. Rookie Malik Benson appears to be in the best position to claim the third wideout spot on the depth chart.
Jack Bech has yet to generate significant buzz among the coaching staff, while Dont’e Thornton has largely faded from the conversation in recent sessions. Team officials clearly recognize the need for additional help at the position and explored adding a veteran free agent earlier this offseason.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, speaking on the Pat McAfee Show, the Raiders were among several clubs that contacted Stefon Diggs about a potential deal. Diggs ultimately chose to sign with the Washington Commanders.
Diggs previously teamed with quarterback Kirk Cousins, which made the Commanders a natural landing spot. Washington sits closer to genuine Super Bowl contention right now than the rebuilding Raiders.
At age 32, Diggs has a limited window left as a high-level playmaker. Joining a club still in the early stages of reconstruction would not have aligned with his career timeline.
Schefter summed up the situation this way: “The Chiefs, Dolphins, and the Raiders all reached out to Stefon Diggs. It was Washington all along for him and it made too much sense.”
With Diggs and Deebo Samuel no longer available, the pool of free-agent wide receivers continues to shrink. Tyreek Hill remains unsigned, though reports indicate he is still working his way back to full health.
Keenan Allen stands out as one of the more realistic remaining targets for Las Vegas. The 34-year-old posted 777 receiving yards a year ago and could still contribute in a supporting role.
DeAndre Hopkins is also a free agent, but he recently accepted a coaching position, signaling that his playing days are likely finished. At this point the Raiders may struggle to locate a meaningful upgrade and could decide the smarter path is to evaluate the talent already on the roster.
Meanwhile, a familiar face stopped by the Raiders’ facility during a recent training camp practice. Former Super Bowl-winning coach Gary Kubiak, father of current head coach Klint Kubiak, paid a visit to the team.
Assistant head coach Mike McCoy shares a long history with the elder Kubiak, having played quarterback for him back in 1995. McCoy expressed genuine enthusiasm about seeing his former coach on the sideline.
“Gary is a phenomenal coach and person,” McCoy said. “To have your kids do what they do, it’s such a cool thing. It’s awesome to see him here.”
McCoy went on to draw parallels between father and son.
“They coached the players extremely hard, and then they also loved them up. They let them know that, ‘Hey, we care about the people also,’” McCoy said. “Klint’s the exact same way. The importance of family and what that means. Gary did a great job where he’s been, and Klint’s done a great job here building the culture. We’re gonna coach the guys hard, but we’re also going to take care of you as a human being and love you up. We care about you.”
The Raiders continue to shape their roster and culture as the preseason approaches, balancing the search for talent with the development of players already in the building.
