The New York Mets acquired right-hander Freddy Peralta from the Milwaukee Brewers during the offseason in a move that cost them a pair of highly regarded prospects, Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams. At the time, the deal was viewed as a significant upgrade for a rotation that needed stability and innings.
Yet as the 2026 season has progressed, Peralta’s performance has fallen short of those expectations, opening the door to speculation that the Mets could explore trading him before the MLB trade deadline.
According to MLB insider Robert Murray, the Tampa Bay Rays have expressed interest in the 30-year-old as part of a broader effort to strengthen their pitching staff.
Peralta has posted a 4.99 ERA across 22 starts for the Mets, accompanied by a career-low strikeout rate of 8.9 per nine innings and a career-high hits-allowed mark of 9.5 per nine. Those numbers have led some evaluators to suggest that a change of scenery might help him regain his form.
His remaining salary, roughly $3 million for the rest of the season against an $8 million annual figure, makes him relatively affordable for a wide range of clubs.
The Rays enter these conversations with a rotation that ranks among the stronger groups in baseball, carrying a collective 3.53 ERA that places fourth in the majors.
Nick Martinez has thrived after signing a one-year, $13 million deal, while Shane McClanahan and Drew Rasmussen have both worked with ERAs in the low threes. Griffin Jax and Ian Seymour, both converted from the bullpen, have also contributed solid outings, with Seymour leading the staff in strikeouts per nine.
Even so, the organization’s history with arm injuries looms large. McClanahan missed all of 2024 following Tommy John surgery in 2023 and then sat out 2025 with a nerve issue in his left triceps. Rasmussen has undergone three Tommy John procedures in his career, the most recent in July 2023, and has reached 150 innings in a season only once.
He currently sits at 111.1 innings pitched. Adding another starter would allow the Rays to manage workloads more carefully as they push for a postseason berth in a competitive American League.
Murray’s reporting indicates that Peralta is one of several names under consideration in Tampa Bay, alongside Angels shortstop Zach Neto and Tigers ace Tarik Skubal. Whether any of those discussions advance will depend on the steep asking prices that typically accompany impact players in a thin market.
The fact that the Rays are this involved in significant trade talks before the deadline is certainly surprising given the franchise’s track record, but evidently, Tampa Bay feels it can win a World Series this year.
For the Mets, trading Peralta would represent an acknowledgment that the substantial prospect package invested in him has not yet produced the desired results, while also creating roster flexibility and the chance to recoup some value.
For the Rays, it would represent a calculated opportunity to buy low on a pitcher with a proven track record who could benefit from a different environment and a lighter overall workload.
In a season defined by uncertainty across many contending clubs, the possibility of Peralta moving from Queens to the Tampa Bay area underscores how quickly fortunes can shift and how aggressively teams are willing to pursue upgrades when the standings remain tightly packed.
