REPORT: Colts Pursuing Massive Trade for DPOY Finalist

The Indianapolis Colts could certainly use some help defensively, as they ranked 29th in the NFL in that category this past season. To their credit, they have addressed their secondary, signing cornerback Charvarius Ward and safety Camryn Bynum, but their pass rush is in serious need of assistance.

That’s especially after losing edge rusher Dayo Odeyingbo to the Chicago Bears in free agency.

Fortunately, the Colts appear to be in the running for one of the best pass rushers in the business: Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson.

Ian Rapoport of NFL media has reported that Indianapolis does have interest in Hendrickson, who recently asked the Bengals for a trade.

Of course, this would require Cincinnati actually obliging and moving Hendrickson, which does not appear to be in the cards at the moment.

As a matter of fact, Rapoport added that the Bengals are working to try and keep Hendrickson, who has just one year remaining on his deal and is coming off of back-to-back campaigns in which he racked up 17.5 sacks. This past year, he finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting.

The Colts’ top pass rusher in 2024 was Kwity Paye, who finished with eight sacks. Only one other player (DeForest Buckner) finished with five or more.

Yes, Laita Latu could break out heading into his sophomore campaign, but there is no doubt that Indianapolis could stand to add more depth to its front seven, and if the opportunity to acquire Hendrickson surfaces, the Colts shouldn’t waste any time in pursuing it.

That being said, it’s worth noting that Hendrickson is 30 years old, so handing him a massive long-term contract extension—which Indianapolis would surely have to do—could be a bit treacherous, especially for a Colts team that is kind of, sort of in a quasi-rebuilding phase.
