The San Francisco 49ers have never been a franchise content to settle when the ultimate prize remains out of reach. That reality hangs over Brock Purdy as he enters the 2026 season under a new five-year, $265 million contract that ranks among the richest deals in the NFL.

While Purdy has delivered impressive results since emerging as the last pick of the 2022 draft, guiding the team to a strong regular-season mark, consecutive NFC Championship appearances, and a Super Bowl berth, the pressure to finally deliver a championship has only intensified.

According to NFL insider Vincent Bonsignore, the stakes this year extend beyond Purdy’s individual performance. The 49ers’ front office and coaching staff have shown a consistent willingness to act aggressively at the quarterback position whenever they believe a superior option might become available.

Bonsignore notes that multiple league sources view San Francisco as a team to watch closely should Cincinnati Bengals star Joe Burrow reach a breaking point with his current franchise and request a change of scenery … especially if things with Purdy go south.

The parallel to past 49ers moves is clear. The organization once traded for Steve Young while Joe Montana was still on the roster, drafted Colin Kaepernick despite having a capable Alex Smith under center, and later pursued Matthew Stafford even as Jimmy Garoppolo had posted a solid winning record and led the team deep into the playoffs.

Those decisions reflected a philosophy that an above-average quarterback is not always enough when Super Bowl contention is the standard.

Bonsignore points out that Burrow’s situation in Cincinnati has shown enough signs of strain that another disappointing season could prompt him to follow a path similar to the one Stafford took when he left the Detroit Lions.

Should that scenario unfold and the 49ers once again fall short of a title with Purdy, San Francisco would represent a logical destination. In such a case, Purdy’s remaining contract control through 2030 could even make him a central piece in any potential package sent to Cincinnati, alongside draft capital.

Purdy retains full agency over how this narrative develops. Strong play that ends with a championship would silence questions and reaffirm his status as the long-term face of the franchise.

Yet the 49ers’ history suggests they will not hesitate to explore every avenue that might finally close the deal. For a team that has come so close so often, the pursuit of the right quarterback has always taken priority over sentiment or short-term stability.

As training camp approaches, that reality ensures the spotlight on Purdy—and the quiet interest in alternatives like Burrow—will remain firmly in place.

As always, Purdy will have to continue proving his doubters wrong.
