Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran has been floated in endless trade speculation, and some felt that the former All-Star could be dealt by Monday’s 6 p.m. ET deadline.

However, Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY has reported that the Red Sox, after previously resisting trade overtures for outfielder Duran, are now expected to trade him this winter.

The revelation came amid a flurry of deadline notes surrounding the 2026 MLB trade market, underscoring a potential shift in Boston’s long-term plans for one of its more dynamic young talents.

Duran has long been a polarizing yet productive presence in the Red Sox outfield. Known for his elite speed, aggressive baserunning, and ability to impact games both offensively and defensively, he has drawn consistent interest from other clubs seeking an athletic centerpiece.

In prior seasons, the Red Sox held firm, viewing him as a foundational piece amid their efforts to rebuild a competitive core. That stance appears to have softened, as Boston seems to be okay with moving him during the offseason.

The timing makes sense in the broader context of Boston’s 2026 campaign. The Red Sox entered July with a disappointing 37-47 record and sat 13 games out of first place. They then surged with a franchise-record 21-4 mark during the month, climbing into the thick of the American League Wild Card race and closing the gap on the division lead.

That late momentum may have clarified the team’s priorities. Rather than treating the current roster as a finished product, front-office decision-makers appear ready to reallocate resources and reshape the roster for 2027 and beyond.

Trading Duran would not come without risk. His speed remains a rare commodity, and his ability to stretch singles into doubles or disrupt opposing defenses has provided Boston with a dimension few other clubs possess.

Yet the Red Sox have shown a willingness in recent years to part with established players when the return offers greater long-term flexibility, whether through prospects, salary relief, or complementary pieces that address other roster holes. Nightengale’s note suggests the club has reached that calculation with Duran.

For opposing teams, the potential availability of a player of Duran’s skill set would represent a significant opportunity. Contending clubs looking for outfield depth or a catalyst at the top of the order could view him as a difference-maker. Non-contenders seeking to accelerate their own rebuilds might also enter the conversation, particularly if Boston prioritizes young pitching or infield talent in return.

As the current season unfolds and the Red Sox continue their push toward the postseason, the prospect of a winter trade will linger in the background. Nightengale’s reporting frames it not as speculation but as an expectation grounded in the club’s evolving outlook.

Whether the move ultimately materializes will depend on the offers that materialize and the organization’s final assessment of its competitive window. For now, the signal is clear: after years of holding on to Duran, the Red Sox appear ready to explore life without him.
