While that mark edges Duran’s current numbers, Boyle notes that Duran arrives with a far more established major-league résumé and remains under team control through at least one additional arbitration year.
The appeal for Miami would be less about immediate star power and more about opportunistic roster construction. Duran’s defensive metrics have still shown flashes of the athleticism that once made him a high-upside prospect, and a change of scenery could provide the reset both player and new organization seek. For a franchise that has historically shown a willingness to take calculated risks on players whose stock has dipped, the cost of acquisition might prove modest.
Boston’s desire to remove a distraction from a clubhouse that is otherwise performing well could translate into a return package that does not require Miami to surrender significant future assets.
Of course, any such move would carry risk. Duran’s recent conduct has tested the patience of Red Sox fans and management alike, and there is no guarantee that a new environment automatically restores either production or harmony. Still, the Marlins’ situation offers a distinct set of incentives. They are not currently locked into a pure rebuild, yet they also are not positioned as heavy favorites to make the playoffs.
Adding a proven outfielder on a short-term, controllable contract fits the profile of a team looking to improve incrementally without overcommitting resources.

Whether the two sides ever formalize discussions remains to be seen, but the mere inclusion of the Marlins in the conversation underscores how dramatically Duran’s market value has shifted in a single season.
