Red Sox Linked to Blockbuster 4-Player Trade for Top Slugger

The Boston Red Sox’s latest early playoff exit has revived the familiar offseason argument that the Red Sox need another middle-of-the-order bat, and one analyst has floated a deal that would answer that need in a single transaction.

After another Wild Card loss, the club is expected to look hard at adding impact talent.

With the free-agent class looking thin, the trade market is the more realistic path, and Patrick McAvoy of On SI has sketched a four-player swap that would send Bryce Harper from Philadelphia to Fenway Park.

Under the proposal, the Red Sox would take Harper alone. The Phillies would receive outfielder Jarren Duran, infielder Kristian Campbell, and right-hander Tanner Houck.

McAvoy’s case rests on the idea that Philadelphia wants to reshape its roster and that Harper’s remaining salary will limit what the Phillies can demand. Boston, in that reading, lands a proven slugger without emptying the farm.

Harper is 33 and still under contract for five seasons of the 13-year, $330 million deal he signed with Philadelphia. He is due a little more than $27 million in each of 2027 and 2028, then just over $23 million in each of the final three years.

A nine-time All-Star, he hit .269 with 29 home runs and 87 RBIs last season and could slot in at first base or right field.

McAvoy argues that Boston’s willingness to absorb that money matters as much as the players going the other way, and that the annual cost would compare favorably with what the Red Sox might spend on free agents such as Randy Arozarena or Seiya Suzuki.

The return package is built around players the Phillies could use immediately or soon. Duran has surfaced in trade talks and would give Philadelphia an everyday outfielder, though his .207 average, 20 home runs, and 69 RBIs last year were a step back.

Campbell, 24, has six years left on an eight-year, $60 million contract and spent 2026 in Triple-A after failing to stick in the majors, so he is more project than sure thing. Houck is controlled for one more season.

He made only one start in 2026 while coming back from injury, but he is expected to be healthy for 2027 and could fill a rotation spot.

McAvoy is careful not to treat the idea as imminent. He calls a Harper deal a pipe dream unless the Phillies actually shop him and Harper agrees to waive his no-trade clause.

Finances cut both ways: the salary is large enough to scare some clubs, yet structured so that a contender already planning to spend might prefer it to a similar free-agent commitment.

If Harper does reach the market, Boston is a logical caller. Adding him would immediately thicken a lineup that has repeatedly come up short in October, which is exactly the problem the Red Sox are trying to solve.
