The Boston Red Sox had been rumored to be involved in talks with the Miami Marlins for All-Star shortstop Otto Lopez, but discussions appear to have ended.

Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reported late Friday that any realistic chance of the Red Sox acquiring shortstop Otto Lopez from the Marlins has effectively evaporated.

According to a league source, the Marlins are not showing any interest in moving the 27-year-old infielder, and communication between the two clubs has been minimal over the past week.

Trading Lopez never made sense for Miami, which is still in playoff contention and has the middle infielder under club control through 2029.

Lopez is slashing .322/.356/.481 with nine home runs, 27 doubles, seven triples and 50 RBI this season while also playing tremendous defense.

For a Red Sox team that has spent much of the season evaluating options up the middle and exploring ways to strengthen its roster ahead of the trade deadline, Lopez represented one of the more intriguing available names.

Earlier reports had linked Boston to him as a potential fit, given the club’s ongoing search for infield depth and everyday contributors who could step in without requiring a major long-term commitment.

That interest now appears to have cooled significantly. The lack of recent dialogue between the organizations suggests Miami is content to keep Lopez as part of its own plans, whether for the remainder of 2026 or as a piece they prefer to retain rather than shop aggressively.

Trade discussions in baseball often stall when one side loses motivation or determines the asking price is simply too high relative to the return, and that dynamic seems to be at work here.

For Red Sox fans and evaluators, the development closes one particular avenue in what has been a measured deadline approach under the current front office.

Boston has generally preferred incremental additions and careful prospect evaluation over splashy moves, and the quiet nature of the Lopez talks aligns with that style.

Whether the club pivots toward other shortstop or utility options in the remaining hours before the deadline, or elects to stand pat and rely on internal solutions, remains to be seen.
