The Boston Red Sox and Washington Nationals have agreed to a one-for-one trade, with left-handed pitcher Connelly Early heading to Washington in exchange for infielder Curtis Mead, according to a report from Red Sox beat writer Chris Cotillo.
Early, a 24-year-old Virginia native, has emerged as a promising young arm for Boston since making his major league debut in September 2025. Drafted in the fifth round out of the University of Virginia in 2023, he impressed quickly after rising through the minors.
In his brief 2025 debut, he struck out 11 batters in five innings, tying a franchise record for a rookie debut. In 2026, Early secured a spot in the Red Sox rotation and posted solid numbers, going 7-5 with a 3.44 ERA and 93 strikeouts over 91.2 innings before landing on the injured list in early July with left elbow inflammation.
Imaging showed no structural damage, and he had begun a throwing progression, but the timing of the trade suggests Boston is willing to move the talented young starter amid its roster needs.
In return, the Red Sox acquire Curtis Mead, a 25-year-old Australian who has found new life with the Nationals after earlier stops with the Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago White Sox. He will likely slide into third base for Boston, replacing Alex Bregman, who departed via free agency last winter.
Once a highly regarded prospect, Mead struggled to establish himself as an everyday player before being designated for assignment by the White Sox in March 2026 and traded to Washington.
Given consistent playing time primarily at third base, Mead has delivered a breakout campaign. Through mid-to-late July, he was hitting around .258 with 17 home runs, strong on-base and slugging numbers, and solid production in the middle of the Nationals’ lineup.
His power surge and improved plate discipline have turned him into a valuable everyday contributor for a Washington team that has hovered near .500.
The deal represents a classic swap of a young pitching prospect with upside for a bat that has shown recent production. For the Red Sox, adding Mead could address infield depth or offensive needs as they navigate the second half of the season.
For the Nationals, acquiring Early provides a left-handed starter with demonstrated major league ability and long-term potential, even with his recent injury history to monitor.
