The Boston Red Sox were viewed as sellers heading into the MLB trade deadline just a few weeks ago, but a 13-game winning streak has completely changed things for the squad.

Now, the Red Sox have surprisingly become buyers with the Aug. 3 deadline looming, and with Boston having a dire need at shortstop, one name makes perfect sense for the club: Los Angeles Angels star Zach Neto.

Acquiring a premier talent like Neto addresses a fundamental need for the Red Sox: impact right-handed production. Boston’s lineup has long needed a potent righty bat to break up its left-handed heavy hitters, and Neto fits that bill beautifully.

He possesses dynamic power, showcased by his ability to comfortably clear the twenty-home-run threshold. Inserting his explosive bat into the middle of the order would immediately make the Red Sox far more difficult for opposing managers to navigate, especially when teams try to deploy left-handed relief specialists late in games.

Neto does lead the American League in strikeouts, which makes him somewhat of a polarizing choice, but he more than compensates for it with his solid .772 OPS.

Beyond just the offensive boost, Neto solves a looming defensive puzzle in the infield. Shortstop is a premium position, and Neto has rapidly developed into one of the sturdiest defenders in the American League. He possesses elite instincts, a strong arm, and excellent range, meaning he would instantly stabilize Boston’s up-the-middle defense.

Adding a high-caliber glove at shortstop ripples across the entire diamond, easing the burden on the pitching staff and allowing the coaching staff to optimize other defensive alignments.

What makes Neto the ultimate prize, however, is his team-controlled status. He is not a short-term rental who will walk away in the winter; he remains under club control through the 2029 season.

For a Red Sox front office that values sustainable success and careful asset management, paying the steep prospect capital required to pry Neto away from the Angels is entirely justifiable.

The 25-year-old represents a foundational cornerstone who aligns perfectly with Boston’s existing young core, giving the team a premium shortstop for the next three and a half years.

Prying a young, elite shortstop away from a rebuilding franchise is never easy, and the Angels will certainly demand a king’s ransom. But the Red Sox boast a deep farm system brimming with the exact kind of high-end pitching prospects that Los Angeles desperately needs.

Pulling the trigger on a blockbuster deal for Zach Neto would not only supercharge Boston’s current push for October but would lock down a premier position at Fenway Park for years to come.
