The Michigan Wolverines are officially looking for a new head football coach after parting ways with former lead man Sherrone Moore earlier this week.

While Michigan is showing up late to the coaching carousel party, the Wolverines happen to be one of the best jobs in the nation. There will be quite a few candidates with heavy interest in being considered for the position.

That being said, the fact of the matter is that the pickings are much thinner than they were just a few short weeks ago.

Plenty of names have already started to emerge in the Michigan coaching search. Some of those names are from the college ranks, while others are either current NFL coordinators or former NFL coaches.

Rece Davis is a highly respected voice in the college football world. He has now made it clear who he believes should be at the top of the Wolverines’ wish list for head coach.

In a post on X, Davis stated that he believes former Stanford head coach David Shaw should be at the top of Michigan’s list.

“If I were in Warde Manuel and Michigan’s position, I’d have David Shaw very high on my list,” Davis wrote. “Given the circumstances, likely atop the list.”

Shaw has not been talked about much since the Wolverines’ coaching job opened up. However, he could make a lot of sense.

During his time at Stanford from the 2011 season through 2022, Shaw led the program to a 96-54 record. He was also great at building culture and building respect within a program. Those are qualities that Michigan could use.

Other names who have come up as potential options for the Wolverines are Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer, Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham, and Washington head coach Jedd Fisch. Those are just a few of the options that have been discussed.

It will be interesting to see who Michigan ends up hiring to lead the program into the future. Shaw hasn’t been a hot topic of conversation to this point, but Davis bringing him up does make a lot of sense. Keep an eye on his name as the search heats up in the coming days.
