Aaron Donald’s surprise return to the Los Angeles Rams has generated more questions than answers in the days leading up to the season opener, and NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport offered a clarifying picture of what the team actually expects from the future Hall of Famer.
The three-time Defensive Player of the Year sat out the entire 2024 and 2025 seasons after retiring following the 2023 campaign. When he agreed to come back, many assumed the Rams would rush him onto the field for Thursday’s historic matchup against the San Francisco 49ers in Australia.
Rapoport pushed back on that assumption.
“It was so much focused on Aaron Donald, his dramatic return, and whether he was going to be on the field Week 1. The reality is, this was not a Week 1 signing for the Los Angeles Rams. It was not a Week 1 return for Aaron Donald. This was more about December and January, which is one reason why his playoff incentives are so big. Because that is really when they want him to affect things,” Rapoport said on NFL Gameday Kickoff.
That long-term view explains why Donald never boarded the plane to Melbourne. The Rams have treated his comeback as a measured process rather than a promotional event. After his first 11-on-11 period, Donald himself acknowledged he felt “a little rusty,” a candid admission from a player who once dominated the league with rare consistency.
Rapoport added that the organization will not hurry him.
“They’re going to take it slow and make sure he gets in game shape,” Rapoport said. “My understanding is next week is at least possible. But no one is saying for sure right now that he is going to play. No. 1 is that when he gets on the field, he is fully 100 percent and ready.”
A Week 2 debut against the New York Giants on Monday Night Football therefore remains the earliest realistic target, though even that date is far from guaranteed.
The Rams appear willing to sacrifice early-season snaps in exchange for a healthier, sharper Donald when the calendar turns toward the postseason.
Former Super Bowl champion and current analyst Jeff Saturday echoed the same sentiment, noting that Donald would have been limited to a handful of pass-rush reps anyway and that expecting an immediate impact after two years away would have been unrealistic.
For a defense that already features talent around him, the waiting game is less about Week 1 results and more about whether Donald can recapture the disruptive force that defined his prime.
The Rams signed him with January in mind. How quickly he closes the gap between practice rust and game readiness will determine whether that bet pays off.
