As the Pittsburgh Steelers prepare for the 2026 NFL season under new leadership, third-year wide receiver Roman Wilson is already generating positive buzz from head coach Mike McCarthy.

The former Michigan standout, selected in the third round of the 2024 draft, appears poised to benefit from the fresh perspective McCarthy has brought to the organization.

In comments to reporters ahead of training camp, McCarthy highlighted Wilson’s proactive approach and strong work ethic during the offseason. The coach noted that Wilson has stood out since the very beginning of his tenure.

“He’s been here from Day 1,” McCarthy said, via ESPN. “He was one of the first men to reach out and clearly ask what the expectation was of him, how I view him, how I saw him fitting in as the roles X, F and Z. He’s doing the work. He’s had a great offseason.

“I just need him to keep showing up and keep working his tail off because he’s got a skill set, there’s a lot there to work with. Roman’s done a really nice job.”

Wilson’s early career with the Steelers has been marked by challenges. Injuries, including issues with his ankle and hamstring, restricted him to just a single game as a rookie in which he recorded no receptions.

He showed improvement in his second season, appearing in 13 games with four starts, but his production remained modest at 12 catches for 166 yards and two touchdowns.

With established veterans DK Metcalf and newly acquired Michael Pittman Jr. leading the wide receiver group, Wilson will enter camp battling primarily for the WR3 spot. His main competition is expected to come from second-round rookie Germie Bernard, who had a standout college career at Alabama.

The transition from longtime coach Mike Tomlin to McCarthy could provide Wilson with the reset he needs. While Tomlin’s tenure brought consistent success to Pittsburgh, a new voice on the sidelines offers Wilson an opportunity to showcase his abilities in a different scheme and earn a more prominent role in Aaron Rodgers’ offense.

If he builds on the impression he’s already made, Wilson has the potential to become a reliable contributor in the passing attack during the upcoming campaign.

Fans and observers will be watching closely as training camp unfolds to see whether Wilson’s dedication translates into increased opportunities on the field. McCarthy’s early endorsement suggests the young receiver is on the right track.

We’ll see if Wilson can forge a more prominent role in the offense this coming fall.
