The Pittsburgh Steelers enter the 2026 preseason with a quarterback room that suddenly looks more crowded than it needs to be. Aaron Rodgers remains the clear starter, while a pair of promising young arms in Will Howard and Drew Allar continue to turn heads in camp.
That leaves veteran Mason Rudolph as the odd man out, and a developing situation in Houston may have just created the perfect opportunity to move him.
Christopher Kline of FanSided recently floated a straightforward idea that the Texans should pursue Rudolph in the wake of Graham Mertz’s torn ACL suffered in Thursday’s preseason opener.
Houston already has C.J. Stroud and Davis Mills, but the loss of Mertz leaves their depth thinner than ideal. Kline suggested a sixth-round pick would be a reasonable price for a proven backup who has started 19 games in his career and still knows how to manage an offense when called upon.
From the Steelers’ perspective, the logic is even cleaner. Pittsburgh has invested draft capital in Howard and Allar over consecutive seasons for a reason. Howard, the former Ohio State national champion, already shows the poise and command expected of a reliable backup.
Allar, selected in the third round this spring out of Penn State, delivered an impressive preseason debut with three total touchdowns and no turnovers. Both young quarterbacks are generating positive reviews, and keeping them behind Rodgers while Rudolph occupies a roster spot does little to accelerate their development.
Rudolph has been a loyal and capable presence in Pittsburgh for most of his six NFL seasons. He has never been flashy, but he has proven durable and competent when opportunities arise.
Trading him now would not be a slight against his contributions. It would simply acknowledge that the organization has younger options who need snaps and that a mid-to-late round pick offers more long-term value than a third quarterback who is unlikely to see meaningful action behind Rodgers.
A move like this also aligns with the Steelers’ broader philosophy of building through the draft and maximizing assets. Sixth-round selections are low-risk, high-upside dart throws, and converting one into tangible roster flexibility makes sense.
Houston gets a steady veteran who can step in if Stroud or Mills miss time. Pittsburgh clears space for its next generation of quarterbacks while adding a draft asset that could eventually help the roster elsewhere.
Rodgers is not getting any younger, and the clock is already ticking on the post-Rodgers era. Giving Howard and Allar every chance to prove themselves while Rodgers is still under center is the responsible approach.
Moving Rudolph for even modest compensation would signal that Pittsburgh is thinking ahead rather than clinging to the familiar. If the Texans are willing to make the call, the Steelers should answer.
