The Pittsburgh Steelers entered their training camp period already navigating a thin margin of health at the wide receiver position, and the latest developments have only heightened those concerns.

On Saturday morning at Saint Vincent College, rookie wideout Kaden Wetjen became the newest name on a growing list of absences after exiting an unpadded walkthrough session to receive medical attention.

According to reports from the practice field, Wetjen spent several minutes with trainers having his left ankle and foot taped. He did not take part in the subsequent special teams period, a role in which he had been a regular participant throughout the summer.

Because the session itself was a shortened walkthrough, it remained unclear whether he might have been able to return later that day.

The timing is particularly unfortunate for the Steelers’ offense. Just two days earlier, Wetjen had emerged as one of the more productive performers in the team’s preseason opener. He finished with a team-high 79 receiving yards, highlighted by a 74-yard gain on a slant route from fellow rookie quarterback Drew Allar in the third quarter.

That explosive play offered an early glimpse of the speed and playmaking ability the undrafted or late-round addition could provide in both the passing game and on special teams.

Wetjen’s absence compounds a broader set of issues in the receiver room. Projected starters DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr. both sat out the preseason contest and remained sidelined for Saturday’s work. Brandon Smith, who suffered an injury during that same preseason game, also missed the walkthrough.

While the Steelers carry considerable depth on their current training camp roster, the accumulation of injuries among both veterans and younger contributors creates practical challenges for coach Mike McCarthy and the coaching staff as they evaluate roles and install the offense alongside quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

At this stage of the preseason, many of these setbacks may prove temporary. Soft-tissue issues and minor joint discomfort are common in the early weeks of camp, especially when players are still adjusting to the physical demands after the long offseason.

Still, the pattern is difficult to ignore. Each successive absence reduces the number of healthy bodies available for competitive reps, which in turn limits the staff’s ability to assess chemistry, timing, and depth chart battles under realistic conditions.

For Wetjen specifically, the next few days will be telling. A short-term setback would be manageable given the depth still on the roster.

A more prolonged absence, however, would remove a player who had already begun to make a tangible impression with his big-play ability.

As the Steelers continue their march toward the regular season, the health of the wide receiver group remains one of the more closely watched storylines in Latrobe.
