While the Milwaukee Brewers hold a 2-0 lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2026 World Series, the Pittsburgh Pirates quietly added two young pitchers to their organization.

On Monday, ahead of Game 3 at Tropicana Field, the club signed left-hander Rogner Betancourt and right-hander Martin Gonzalez to minor-league contracts, according to the MiLB.com transactions log.

Both players are just 17 years old and hail from Venezuela.

Betancourt, born November 1, 2008, in El Temblador, stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 150 pounds. He throws left-handed and bats right-handed. Gonzalez, born October 28, 2008, in Ciudad Guayana, is listed at 6-foot-2 and 203 pounds.

He throws and bats right-handed. The signings represent typical international amateur additions for a franchise that continues to invest in its minor-league pipeline while sorting through the results of a transitional major-league season.

The Pirates finished 2026 with an 82-80 record, good for third place in the National League Central. It marked measurable progress from recent campaigns, yet still left them short of the postseason.

Manager Don Kelly’s club showed signs of competitiveness at times, but inconsistencies, particularly on offense, kept them from contending for a Wild Card spot.

Adding two teenage arms from Latin America fits the organization’s longstanding approach of identifying and developing inexpensive talent that can eventually contribute at the major-league level or serve as trade chips.

Neither pitcher has professional experience yet, so their immediate impact will be limited to the lower minors.

For the Pirates, the moves keep the front office active during a period when most attention is fixed on the Fall Classic.

The Brewers’ early series lead, built on wins in Games 1 and 2 at American Family Field, has shifted focus to the Rays’ home park for the next contest.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh’s decision to ink Betancourt and Gonzalez underscores that the business of roster building does not pause for the postseason.

These low-profile signings rarely generate headlines on their own, but they form part of the steady accumulation of prospects that has defined the Pirates’ rebuilding efforts in recent years.

Whether either arm develops into a meaningful contributor remains years away.

For now, the organization has two more teenagers under contract while the rest of the baseball world watches the World Series unfold.
