This scarcity has shifted expectations around their strategy, with many rival teams anticipating a stronger emphasis on pitching reinforcements.
The Phillies’ recent performance underscores the need for improvement at the plate. They have have one of the worst offenses in the major leagues all season long, and their lineup depth has been awful.
While that level of production could support a contending club with stronger pitching, the current roster has shown inconsistencies, particularly in the lower half of the lineup. Homegrown options such as Gabriel Rincones Jr., Felix Reyes, and Otto Kemp have combined for a negative WAR in limited opportunities, highlighting the thin margin for error.
Bryan De La Cruz has provided a temporary boost after being called up from the minors. The 29-year-old outfielder, previously a replacement-level performer over his first five seasons, delivered a three-RBI performance in a rain-shortened victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.
That marked the first time a Phillies right fielder had achieved such a feat since April. Interim manager Don Mattingly described him as solid, yet De La Cruz is not assured of regular playing time after the deadline. His brief stretch of competence illustrates how low the bar has been set for external help.
Gelb notes that the Phillies have checked in on several potential bat upgrades. They expressed interest in Lane Thomas before he was dealt to the Atlanta Braves and have evaluated Taylor Ward closely during a recent series. Other names, including Jo Adell of the Angels and Alex Call, have drawn attention, though Call would likely serve only in a platoon role.
The team has also considered infield possibilities such as Gleyber Torres if the Detroit Tigers continue selling, as well as Luis Arraez of the San Francisco Giants, despite the positional complications his arrival would create. Left-handed outfielders like Jake McCarthy of the Rockies, Lars Nootbaar of the Cardinals, and Daulton Varsho of the Blue Jays remain on the radar as well.
Despite these inquiries, the thin market for quality hitters has led many observers to believe Dave Dombrowski will prioritize pitching. That could involve acquiring two relievers or a combination of a reliever and a starter who might transition into a postseason bullpen role.
Such moves would align with the practical realities of the current landscape, where capable bats are scarce. As Gelb observes, the complementary pieces may not determine the team’s ultimate fate, but even modest upgrades have proven valuable in providing balance.
