A Bleacher Report analyst has identified the Philadelphia Phillies as a possible landing spot for Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran in a major offseason trade.
Zachary D. Rymer outlined the scenario in a recent piece on early 2026-27 free agency and trade predictions. He pointed to Philadelphia’s need for help at the corners of the outfield after a season in which production there lagged.
The Phillies finished 88-74 and reached the postseason before falling in the National League Wild Card Series. Their left-field group generated only -0.2 rWAR, according to the analysis.
Duran, 30, is coming off a difficult year in Boston. He hit .207 with 20 home runs, 69 RBIs and 21 stolen bases in 551 at-bats across 151 games.
His OPS sat at .627 with an OPS+ of 76, well below league average. Baseball-Reference credited him with 0.4 WAR for the season.
That marked a sharp drop from recent seasons. In 2025 he batted .256 with 16 home runs, 84 RBIs and 24 steals. His 2024 All-Star campaign produced a .285 average, 21 home runs, 75 RBIs, 34 steals and a 9.0 rWAR total while he was named the All-Star Game MVP.
Boston’s outfield depth has made Duran a frequent name in trade talk. He is one of three left-handed-hitting outfielders competing for spots around Ceddanne Rafaela.
Rymer wrote: “The 30-year-old is also a spare part for the Red Sox, as he’s one of three left-handed-hitting outfielders for two spots on either side of Ceddanne Rafaela. He’d fit better on the Phillies, who got -0.2 rWAR from left field this season. It would also be a reunion of sorts. Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski was still running the Red Sox when they drafted Duran in 2018. Despite his recent slide, he’s still proven to be one of the top players from that year’s draft class.”
Dombrowski was Boston’s president of baseball operations when the Red Sox selected Duran in the seventh round of the 2018 draft out of Long Beach State.
Trade speculation around Duran also surfaced during the 2026 season. Boston ultimately held onto the former All-Star rather than dealing him before the deadline.
Duran remains under team control for two more seasons after 2026. That window of control could make him appealing to clubs seeking a bounce-back candidate without a long-term commitment.
The Red Sox have publicly discussed their crowded outfield at times this year. Moving Duran would open playing time for younger options while potentially returning prospect capital.
Philadelphia’s corner outfielders struggled to produce consistent offense in 2026. Adding a player with Duran’s speed and prior power production could address that gap if he returns closer to his 2024-25 form.
No formal discussions between the clubs have been reported. The prediction remains one analyst’s projection as the offseason approaches.
Duran’s contact quality held up reasonably well in 2026 despite the low average, with exit velocity and hard-hit rates near league norms. Strikeout rate climbed to 27.1 percent, however, contributing to the drop in results.
The Phillies are expected to explore multiple avenues to upgrade the outfield this winter, whether through free agency or trades. Duran’s name is one that continues to surface in early speculation.
