The Philadelphia Phillies have locked in their starting rotation for this weekend’s series in New York, a decision that arrives on the same day the club officially added veteran right-hander Jose Urquidy.
According to reporting from MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki, Urquidy will take the ball Friday in what amounts to a hybrid appearance, while highly regarded prospect Andrew Painter draws the Saturday assignment.
The club is not rearranging its established order simply to accommodate the newcomer, in part because of an off day Monday that already gives the staff extra rest and roster flexibility heading into the final stretch.
That modest adjustment still leaves the Phillies with ten games to play and a delicate balancing act ahead.
They sit at 84-68 with a five-game cushion in the loss column over Arizona and a 98 percent chance of reaching the postseason, per FanGraphs. Their magic number to clinch a Wild Card berth is six.
The remaining schedule against the Mets, Brewers and Rays will determine not only whether they punch their ticket but also where they land in the seeding and whether they can host a Wild Card series at Citizens Bank Park.
Aaron Nola is slated to open the Mets series and is lined up for another start against Milwaukee later in the week, positioning him as a potential Game 1 option should Philadelphia reach the playoffs.
Cristopher Sánchez remains the staff’s most important piece for rest management; starting him on four days’ rest against Tampa Bay on September 25 would put him on similar rest for a possible Game 2 of a Wild Card series. That scenario would require shifting Painter and Urquidy around the calendar.
Because Urquidy is not postseason-eligible and becomes a free agent after the season, the Phillies could designate him for assignment once his two remaining starts are complete, freeing a roster spot for extra bullpen help in the last three games.
Zack Wheeler presents another late-season question. If the Phillies need a win on September 27, they can send the veteran out; otherwise they can skip him and keep him fresh for a potential Wild Card opener.
Every remaining game carries weight. The three National League Wild Card spots are essentially spoken for, yet only a single loss separates the top three clubs.
Philadelphia holds a tiebreaker over San Diego but not over Chicago, so the next ten contests will decide whether the Phillies open October at home or on the road.
