The Philadelphia Phillies have emerged as a notable presence in the growing interest surrounding Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, with reports indicating the National League club dispatched scouts to evaluate the left-hander during his latest outing.
Multiple teams monitored Skubal’s performance against the Kansas City Royals last Friday, according to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi. The Phillies stood out in that group of observers as the Aug. 3 trade deadline approaches.
Morosi noted on social media: “The Phillies are among several teams that scouted Tarik Skubal’s start last weekend. Philly has lost 6 of 7. Scott Harris has traded 3 pitchers to the Phillies since arriving to Detroit: Soto, Lorenzen, Manning.”
That recent skid has put pressure on the Phillies’ front office to explore upgrades capable of steadying the club’s postseason push. Adding a pitcher of Skubal’s caliber would significantly strengthen an already formidable rotation headlined by Zack Wheeler and Cristopher Sanchez.
While the Phillies have surfaced in earlier speculation involving the two-time Cy Young Award winner, other clubs such as the Tampa Bay Rays, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves and Milwaukee Brewers have drawn more consistent links to the Tigers left-hander.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that league executives generally believe the Tigers “want to trade” Skubal, though questions remain about whether Detroit can secure a package matching its expectations for the pending free agent.
Skubal delivered a strong showing in the start that drew the scouts, working 7.1 innings while allowing four hits and one earned run. He recorded 12 strikeouts in the outing against the Royals.The 29-year-old has posted an 8-5 record with a 2.70 ERA this season, accumulating 110 strikeouts over 90 innings.
Those numbers come after he missed time earlier in the year because of an elbow issue that required attention.
