The second half of the season has proven particularly challenging. Philadelphia has dropped every series contested since the All-Star break, compiling a 3-9 mark in that span and allowing the Atlanta Braves to widen their lead in the National League East.
With the deadline now just days away, pressure is mounting for the front office to act decisively. Observers note that the Phillies must pursue meaningful upgrades if they hope to remain competitive in a crowded field.
All-Star first baseman Bryce Harper recently faced criticism after voicing concerns about the team’s need for additional support. Still, his assessment aligns with the club’s on-field struggles.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report included the Phillies among the most desperate clubs seeking deals before the cutoff. That ranking reflects the urgency created by the team’s second-half slide.
“It’s a lot. They probably won’t be able to fix it all. But they have to try, because this window as a World Series contender isn’t going to stay open forever,” Miller wrote.
This veteran-laden roster understands the championship window will not remain open indefinitely. Although Philadelphia possesses elite talent, the group is notably top-heavy and vulnerable in several areas.
One clear priority involves the batting order. Adding at least one more productive hitter, ideally a right-handed bat, would strengthen a unit that has shown inconsistency despite its star power.
The starting rotation presents another concern. While the top three of Cristopher Sanchez, Zack Wheeler and Jesus Luzardo have performed at a high level, the rest of the staff has struggled, leaving the team well below .500 in games started by other pitchers.

Left-handed relief options have also underperformed, further thinning the late-inning arsenal available to the coaching staff.
Given the multiple gaps across the roster, the Phillies are expected to remain highly active in the final days before the deadline. Front office executives must secure several upgrades if the club intends to position itself as a genuine contender rather than a fringe playoff participant.
