The Philadelphia Phillies have transferred 22-year-old right-hander Cody Bowker from Double-A Reading to the development list, via the MiLB transaction log.

Bowker, a third-round pick (100th overall) out of Vanderbilt in 2025, has been one of the more prolific strikeout pitchers in the Phillies’ system this season.

Across three levels, the Maine native has posted 128 strikeouts in 95.1 innings, a rate of more than 12 punchouts per nine innings, while walking just 30. He finished 5-6 with a 4.53 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP.

The numbers stand out even more when broken down by stop. In Low-A Clearwater, Bowker struck out 64 batters in 39.2 innings despite a 5.90 ERA.

After a mid-June promotion to High-A Jersey Shore, he settled in: 43 strikeouts and only seven walks in 35.2 innings with a 3.28 ERA. A late-August jump to Reading produced 21 strikeouts in 20 innings over four starts.

That swing-and-miss profile is what made the Phillies draft him aggressively and keep him in the rotation. Bowker works from a low, drop-and-drive slot that creates an unusual angle on a 91-94 mph fastball with ride.

He mixes a cutter, slider, and changeup. Scouts have long noted that the fastball is his clearest bat-missing pitch; the secondaries still need more consistency for him to stick as a starter rather than a multi-inning reliever.

The development list move, coming in mid-September as the minor-league season winds down, is typically used for extra work, workload management, or a short reset without placing a player on the injured list.

Bowker had already climbed from Low-A to Double-A in his first full professional season after not pitching after the 2025 draft.

A former two-way player at Georgetown who transferred to Vanderbilt for his junior year, Bowker posted 99 strikeouts in 72 innings for the Commodores.

That same missing-bats trait has followed him into pro ball and is the main reason he remains a prospect of interest even as the organization pauses his on-field work.

For now, the Phillies are choosing development over additional innings.

Given how quickly Bowker has risen and how often he has generated empty swings, the organization is likely treating this as a short-term adjustment rather than a long-term setback.
