Phillies Connected to All-Star Pitcher With Ranger Suarez in Doubt

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Ranger Suarez is currently dealing with a back injury, putting his status for the start of the 2025 MLB regular season in doubt.

While the Phillies are loaded with starting pitching, this could still ultimately present a problem for them, as Suarez is one of their top arms.

With Suarez’s future in doubt, Philadelphia may want to consider adding another hurler to bolster its rotation depth, and Matt Grazel of That Ball’s Outta Here has identified a potential—and familiar—option for the club: Kyle Gibson.

“One notable starter who is still available is Kyle Gibson,” Grazel wrote. “The right-hander was with the organization during part of 2021 and all of the 2022 season.”

The Phillies initially acquired Gibson from the Texas Rangers midway through the 2021 campaign, where he made his first and only All-Star appearance. He went 10-9 with a 3.71 ERA while allowing 158 hits and registering 155 strikeouts that season, although he pitched to the tune of a 5.09 ERA across 12 appearances and 11 starts in Philadelphia.

Gibson then went 10-8 with a 5.05 ERA during his one full season in the City of Brotherly Love in 2022, so he doesn’t exactly have the best track record with the Phillies.

However, as Grazel notes, Gibson would probably comprise a better option than Taijuan Walker, who registered a 7.10 ERA last season. Meanwhile, Gibson tallied a respectable 4.24 ERA with the St. Louis Cardinals. He also has been very durable throughout his career.

Philadelphia should be fine if Suarez misses some time, but if he is sidelined for an extended period, bringing another pitcher would be nice. Perhaps a reunion with Gibson could the answer, even if it isn’t a sexy one.
