The Philadelphia Eagles have decided to place starting left guard Landon Dickerson on injured reserve after a difficult season opener, giving the veteran time to recover from a knee problem that limited him on Sunday, according to insider Jeff McLane.

Imaging showed bone bruising in his right knee that would not improve if he continued playing through it.

Dickerson explained that a teammate rolled up on him during practice a few weeks ago and that the resulting injury is separate from the meniscus issue that required surgery before the 2025 season.

Last year, he rushed back and started 15 games while clearly diminished, an experience he now says he does not want to repeat.

The 27-year-old three-time Pro Bowl selection admitted he was a liability against Washington, allowing multiple pressures and drawing a holding penalty in Philadelphia’s narrow 24-22 victory.

He told listeners he should not have been on the field until he felt healthy and that sitting now is the best way to have a productive stretch later in the year.

Under league rules, a player designated to return from injured reserve must miss at least four games, so Dickerson will be unavailable against Tennessee, Chicago, the Rams, and Jacksonville in London.

He becomes eligible to return in Week 6 when the Eagles host Carolina on October 18.

Dickerson, a second-round pick out of Alabama in 2021, signed a four-year extension worth $84 million before the 2024 season and later agreed to a revised deal this offseason.

Rumors circulated that he considered retirement after another injury-plagued campaign, though he has said those reports overstated his thinking.

Head coach Nick Sirianni still pointed to Dickerson’s power in the run game even while acknowledging the protection issues that surfaced against the Commanders.

Second-year lineman Drew Kendall and Willie Lampkin are the leading internal candidates to fill the left guard spot, and the staff could also consider shifting pieces along the interior.

The early absence tests a unit that Philadelphia has spent years building through the draft and free agency.

If Dickerson returns healthy in mid-October, the Eagles hope he can recapture the form that once made him one of the league’s more reliable interior blockers rather than grind through another compromised season.
