The Philadelphia Eagles received an early injury scare as training camp got underway when newly acquired edge rusher Jonathan Greenard was sidelined with a pectoral strain.
While the injury does not sound incredibly serious, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio wasn’t ready to place any specific timeline for Greenard and said his Week 1 availability “remains to be seen,” via John McMullen of Eagles on SI.
What’s more, Fangio stated that Greenard will miss a lot of camp.
Greenard entered the summer with high expectations after arriving in Philadelphia during the offseason to strengthen the Eagles’ pass rush. His ability to generate pressure off the edge is expected to play a significant role in the defense, making his absence from early practices an immediate talking point.
The timing is obviously very unfortunate. Training camp provides valuable opportunities for new additions to build chemistry with teammates, learn the defensive system in live situations, and establish continuity before preseason action begins. Greenard will instead focus on rehabilitation while the coaching staff evaluates the rest of the edge-rushing group.
His absence could create additional opportunities for younger defenders competing for larger roles. Those extra practice snaps may prove valuable as Philadelphia continues to shape its defensive rotation heading into the season.
Greenard’s arrival was one of the Eagles’ most significant defensive moves of the offseason. The veteran has demonstrated the ability to consistently pressure quarterbacks when healthy and was brought in to provide leadership and production on a defense with championship aspirations.
The 29-year-old didn’t have the best season with the Minnesota Vikings in 2025, logging 38 tackles and three sacks in 12 games, but he is two years removed from racking up 59 tackles and 12 sacks en route to a Pro Bowl appearance.
Greenard began his NFL career with the Houston Texans back in 2020 and struggled to stay on the field throughout his four-year tenure with the club. When he was healthy, however, he was productive, including a 12.5-sack showing in 2023.
The Eagles are understandably taking a cautious approach, prioritizing Greenard’s long-term health over rushing him back onto the practice field.
As training camp continues, Philadelphia’s focus will be on ensuring Greenard returns at full strength while the rest of the roster prepares for another season with high expectations.
We’ll see if Philly decides to make any roster moves as Greenard recovers.
