The Philadelphia Eagles signe running back Jaydon Blue to their practice squad on Thursday, closing a brief and quiet chapter that saw the second-year back bounce between the active roster and the waiver wire in a matter of days, the team announced.
Blue’s latest transaction comes as part of a broader set of roster adjustments that also brought in guard Evan Neal and linebacker Anfernee Orji while the team waived tight end E.J. Jenkins.
For Blue, the move is familiar territory. The 22-year-old joined the Eagles’ practice squad in early September after the Dallas Cowboys waived him at final cuts.
He was then elevated to the 53-man roster ahead of Week 6 amid a wave of injuries that sidelined Saquon Barkley, Will Shipley, and Tank Bigsby. Blue did not record a carry or reception in that game and was waived earlier this week before Thursday’s re-signing.
The path that led Blue to this point began in the 2025 draft, when Dallas selected him in the fifth round out of Texas. At 5-foot-9 and 198 pounds, he arrived with the kind of pure speed that turns heads—he clocked a 4.38-second 40-yard dash—and a productive final college season.
As a junior with the Longhorns, Blue carried the ball 134 times for 730 yards and eight touchdowns while also catching 42 passes for 368 yards and six scores.
His rookie year with the Cowboys produced limited opportunities: five games, 38 carries for 129 yards and a touchdown, plus a single five-yard reception.
Ball security and pass protection questions, along with a smaller frame that can limit between-the-tackles effectiveness, kept him from locking down a consistent role.
Philadelphia’s interest has always centered on that residual upside.
With Barkley managing a hamstring issue and both Shipley and Bigsby on injured reserve earlier this month, the Eagles needed bodies capable of contributing in a hurry.
Blue’s brief elevation offered a low-risk chance to evaluate him in the building again, even if game action never materialized.
Returning him to the practice squad now keeps that option open without committing a roster spot, a practical approach for a contender managing depth across the backfield.
Whether Blue sees meaningful snaps the rest of the season will depend on health elsewhere and how he performs in practice.
For now, he remains a familiar name on the Eagles’ reserve list, a reminder of how quickly opportunities can appear and disappear for young running backs trying to stick in the league.
