With the bulk of free agency now behind us, all eyes in the NFL world are turning towards the upcoming draft, scheduled exactly one month from today. For the Atlanta Falcons, there’s a palpable sense of relief compared to just a couple of weeks ago, as they’ve managed to address two significant gaps in their lineup.
The addition of Kirk Cousins at quarterback promises a substantial upgrade, while the acquisitions of Darnell Mooney, Rondale Moore, and Ray-Ray Mcloud inject much-needed depth into the wide receiver corps.
Looking ahead to the remainder of the offseason, it’s reasonable to expect the Falcons to prioritize strengthening their defense. However, as observed over recent seasons, General Manager Terry Fontenot has shown a penchant for selecting the best available player, particularly in the early rounds of the draft.
This approach has led them to draft three skill position players in the top 10 in consecutive cycles, indicating a willingness to continue in a similar vein this year.
Yet, when considering the ideal positional fit at the top of the draft, few prospects align as well with the Falcons’ needs as Dallas Turner from Alabama, recently highlighted by Brad Spielberger as the perfect NFL Draft fit for Atlanta.
“Turner was a slender, wiry-framed underclassman but also a budding star edge defender who continued to draw attention on film last season when scouts were studying Will Anderson Jr. And sure enough, he took his game to new heights in 2023 after adding on some muscle. Turner earned a 90.7 pass-rush grade on true pass sets with a 19.6% pass-rush win rate and 11 sacks — a big number in college. Then came the NFL scouting combine, where Turner stole the show with testing numbers in the 94th percentile or better in the 40-yard dash, 10-yard split, vertical jump and broad jump. Still just 21 years old, Turner profiles as a player who will only get better with NFL seasoning.”
The Falcons have long been in pursuit of a premier pass rusher, a quest spanning well over a decade. Their struggles in this area, both in the draft and free agency, have been notable, leaving them with arguably one of the weakest pass-rushing units in the league at present. With the 8th overall pick in the draft, they have a prime opportunity to secure the draft’s top defensive talent.
Turner’s reputation precedes him, having garnered attention as a five-star recruit during his high school days. He’s consistently been touted as a potential top-10 pick, a status validated by his impressive showing at the NFL Combine. Turner possesses a rare combination of athleticism and potential, though development will be key to fully unlock his superstar abilities.
Whether it’s Turner or another standout pass rusher, or perhaps a talented cornerback, the Falcons stand to benefit by selecting the top defensive prospect available in the first round. Strengthening this unit is paramount for their success, particularly considering the departure of former defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen and the existing deficiencies in both the trenches and secondary.
Addressing these areas is crucial for the Atlanta Falcons to establish themselves as legitimate contenders, even with the addition of Kirk Cousins at quarterback. The 2024 NFL Draft is an important one for this franchise.
