Romeo Doubs sat out Wednesday’s practice with the New England Patriots, prompting a brief wave of concern among fans still adjusting to the team’s newly remade receiving corps.

The absence does not appear to signal anything serious, via ESPN’s Mike Reiss. Reports indicate the wide receiver had looked a touch hobbled in recent sessions, and the day off was most likely a prudent decision to give his body a chance to recover rather than the start of a longer-term problem.

But it’s also worth noting that Doubs got off to a pretty slow start in training camp in general, which is certainly a bit worrisome considering he is expected to be one of the Patriots’ top wide receivers in 2026.

New England invested heavily in Doubs this offseason, signing him to a four-year deal worth $68 million after he spent his first four NFL seasons in Green Bay. That commitment followed the release of Stefon Diggs and arrived alongside the acquisition of A.J. Brown, transforming a unit that had lacked consistent production.

Doubs finished last year with 55 catches for 724 yards and six touchdowns, numbers that suggested he could serve as a reliable second option in a deeper group.

Early training-camp sessions, however, showed the expected adjustment period that comes with learning a new offense and developing timing with quarterback Drake Maye.

When healthy, Doubs has begun to display progress. He has given Maye a dependable target over the middle of the field, finding open space and converting those opportunities into positive gains.

Those moments have been encouraging for a player carrying sizable expectations, yet they have also coincided with the minor aches that ultimately led to Wednesday’s absence.

The hope around the facility is that a short rest will allow him to return quickly and continue building chemistry with Maye and the rest of the offense.

The timing of Doubs’s day off also carries roster implications. For months, speculation has linked Kayshon Boutte to a possible trade. Boutte stepped away from voluntary workouts earlier and has been mentioned as open to a move, yet he has performed well in camp and remains a familiar target for Maye.

An unexpected absence like Doubs’s serves as a reminder of how quickly depth charts can shift. Keeping Boutte around provides a comfort option should other receivers miss time, and it may ultimately persuade the Patriots to hold onto him rather than force a deal before the season begins.

For now the focus remains on Doubs’s recovery. A minor setback is common in the grind of training camp, especially for a player still settling into a new system.

If he returns soon and stays available, the Patriots’ receiver room will continue developing the balance and reliability that the front office sought when it reshaped the position group this spring.
