Paige Bueckers Reveals Hardest Player to Guard Without Hesitation

Paige Bueckers already has a clear picture of the Indiana Fever after three meetings across her first two WNBA seasons. The Dallas Wings guard recently singled out one player as the toughest assignment in the league: Indiana star Kelsey Mitchell.

The 2025 Rookie of the Year pointed to Mitchell’s blend of speed and scoring versatility as the main reason. Bueckers noted how the Fever guard can create offense from multiple spots on the floor.

“Right now, I’d probably say Kelsey Mitchell,” Bueckers said. “Because she’s so unpredictable. She’s fast, twitchy, extremely quick, can also shoot. So if you give her space… and she’s just super creative.”

That assessment carries extra weight after the pair shared the court as teammates. Bueckers captained Team Coop at the 2026 WNBA All-Star Game, where Mitchell joined her roster and offered a close-up look at the skills that make her so difficult to contain.

Team Coop ultimately fell short in the showcase, dropping a 129-122 decision on Saturday. Jonquel Jones paced Team Spoon with 22 points while Caitlin Clark added 17.

Mitchell led all scorers with 28 points on 11-of-19 shooting, including a 5-of-11 mark from three-point range. Bueckers finished with 12 points and seven assists in the losing effort.

The performance underscored why Bueckers views Mitchell as such a challenge. The Fever guard’s ability to attack off the dribble or knock down perimeter shots forces defenders into constant adjustments.

Indiana sits at 17-10 and has put together a three-game winning streak heading into the next stretch of the schedule. The Fever return to action Tuesday night against the Seattle Storm at Climate Pledge Arena.

Meanwhile, Bueckers and the Wings hold an 18-9 record and occupy fourth place in the standings, one spot ahead of Indiana. Dallas has won seven of its past eight contests and looks to keep the momentum going.

The Wings host the Atlanta Dream on Wednesday in their next outing. Both teams enter the midseason stretch with solid positioning and recent success that could shape the playoff picture.

Bueckers’ familiarity with Mitchell stems from those earlier regular-season meetings. Each encounter has reinforced the respect the young Wings star holds for the veteran guard’s craftiness and quickness.

Mitchell’s All-Star explosion only added to that reputation. Her efficient scoring night showed the full range of the offensive tools Bueckers described.

For the Fever, maintaining their current form will be key as they prepare for a road test in Seattle. A continued winning streak could help them climb further in a competitive conference.

Dallas, riding its own hot streak, will look to capitalize on home-court advantage against Atlanta. Bueckers’ playmaking and scoring remain central to the Wings’ recent surge.

The mutual respect between the two guards highlights one of the league’s emerging individual matchups. As both teams push toward the postseason, their paths could cross again and test Bueckers’ assessment in real time.

Mitchell’s creativity and speed force opponents to stay disciplined on every possession. That unpredictability is exactly what Bueckers highlighted when ranking her among the league’s most challenging covers.

With both squads playing well, the coming weeks should offer more opportunities to see how those individual battles influence team results.
