Fernando Tatis Jr. will start at second base Tuesday night for the San Diego Padres, a positional shift that has not happened in 43 games and arrives because of an injury that ended another player’s season.
The Padres visit the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park after a 5-0 win Monday in which Tatis went 1-for-5 with a double.
Managerial staff posted the lineup with Tatis batting leadoff and playing second, followed by Tyler Wade in left, Manny Machado at third, Ty France at first, Jackson Merrill in center, Xander Bogaerts at short, Austin Hays as designated hitter, Freddy Fermin catching, and Jake Bowen in right. Randy Vásquez takes the mound.
The move traces directly to Luis Rengifo. The utility infielder tore his ACL on Friday against the Tampa Bay Rays and was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
San Diego selected the contract of catcher Ethan Salas from Triple-A El Paso and recalled right-hander Jhony Brito in corresponding roster moves. Rengifo had appeared in 38 games and hit .291; he will miss the remainder of the year.
With that option gone, Tatis slides back to a position he last occupied regularly more than a month and a half ago. This will be his 44th start at second this season.
Tatis remains one of the more productive everyday players in the National League. Through 136 games he is batting .281 with 150 hits, 29 doubles, 17 home runs, two triples, 77 runs, 67 RBIs and 31 stolen bases.
The three-time All-Star’s versatility has given the Padres flexibility throughout the year, and the latest adjustment is another example of that value.
San Diego sits at 73-65 and holds a half-game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks for the final National League wild-card spot. Monday’s shutout snapped a three-game losing streak and improved the club to 5-5 over its last ten games.
Vásquez enters his 22nd start with a 10-6 record and a 4.02 ERA across 123 innings. Cincinnati, at 65-73, owns the worst record in the NL Central and has gone 4-6 in its last ten. The Reds counter with Nick Lodolo and a lineup featuring Elly De La Cruz as designated hitter.
The positional shuffle is practical rather than dramatic, yet it underscores how quickly a single injury can rearrange a contending roster.
Tatis at second base is familiar enough that the Padres expect little defensive drop-off while they absorb Rengifo’s absence. How long the arrangement lasts will depend on health and results as September begins and the Wild Card race tightens.
