Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea has asked to be traded if contract talks with the club fail to produce an agreement. The development has prompted discussion among fans and analysts about possible destinations, with several pointing to the Green Bay Packers as a strong match.
JP Acosta of CBS Sports included the Packers among a short list of clubs for which a deal involving Vea would appear logical.
Green Bay recently completed an extension with defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt. The team holds no long-term commitments to Karl Brooks or Javon Hargrave past the current season.
Available salary-cap room would allow the Packers to structure a transaction if they choose to pursue one. Whether any move materializes remains uncertain.
An examination of Green Bay’s interior defensive line shows four primary candidates. Adding Vea would immediately elevate the group’s top talent.
Vea lines up as a nose tackle and ranks as the unit’s strongest defender against the run. His ability to generate pressure also sets him apart.
Over the previous three seasons, Vea has recorded 17 sacks. Wyatt leads Packers defensive linemen in compensation and has posted 14.5 sacks in that span.
Brooks has contributed eight sacks during the same period. Hargrave suffered an injury in 2024, has yet to regain prior form and currently resides on the physically unable to perform list.
The remaining option is third-round selection Chris McClellan. While the rookie possesses potential, Vea represents a clearer short-term upgrade.
Should Hargrave’s recovery lag or the organization decide against retaining Brooks in the final season of his rookie deal, roster space for Vea could open.
Current speculation places Vea’s trade market around a second-round selection plus a fifth-round pick. Brooks carries approximate fifth-round value, creating a possible package of a second-round choice and Brooks in exchange for the Buccaneers veteran.
Such a swap would cost Green Bay some younger talent. Officials may not intend to extend Brooks beyond 2026 in any case. Tampa Bay would retain defensive-line depth while acquiring a lower-cost player eligible for a more modest future contract.
A second-round asset constitutes a significant outlay for what could prove a one-year rental. Yet the Packers are operating inside a competitive window centered on quarterback Jordan Love and edge rusher Micah Parsons, whom they acquired via trade.
Securing Vea would further that aggressive approach. Green Bay also could negotiate a brief extension with Vea covering the present season and possibly the next, providing flexibility under the salary cap.
The combination of a clear on-field upgrade, the desire to maximize a contending roster and the financial capacity to absorb the contract explains why the Packers surface so frequently in conversations surrounding Vea.
