Ohio State coach Ryan Day said Saturday that five-star freshman wide receiver Chris Henry Jr. is “not a freshman anymore.”
Speaking to reporters after the Buckeyes’ ninth practice of fall camp, Day highlighted the early progress of the highly touted prospect.
“He’s made a lot of plays. He’s learned the offense well. He’s buying into special teams. He’s playing physical. Yeah, I’m excited to see where this goes for him,” Day said.
Henry, listed at 6-foot-5 and 211 pounds, arrived in Columbus as one of the most anticipated members of the 2026 recruiting class. Ranked as the nation’s top wide receiver and among the top 10 overall prospects by major services, he was the first player to verbally commit to Ohio State in the cycle back in July 2023.
The California product out of Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana stuck with his pledge even after a late push from other programs following the departure of former Buckeyes receivers coach Brian Hartline. Henry signed during the early period and enrolled early enough to participate in spring practices.
In high school, Henry posted strong numbers despite limited opportunities due to injury. As a senior, he recorded 28 receptions for 607 yards and six touchdowns in eight games, averaging more than 21 yards per catch. His sophomore season at Withrow High School in Cincinnati produced a school-record 1,127 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns on 71 catches.
Henry is the son of the late Chris Henry, a former West Virginia standout and Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver who died in 2009. His sister Seini plays on the Ohio State women’s basketball team.
Day’s comments came as the Buckeyes work through preseason preparations roughly three weeks before their season opener against Ball State. The coach has previously noted Henry’s physical development and improved approach since the spring, when the freshman lost his black stripe — a program tradition signaling readiness for greater responsibility.
Ohio State’s wide receiver group returns talent, especially with superstar wideout Jeremiah Smith, but also features competition among newcomers. Henry has drawn attention for his size, catch radius and ability to create separation, traits that could earn him early playing time on offense and special teams.
The Buckeyes have a history of developing elite receivers into NFL prospects, and Henry’s combination of length and athleticism has drawn comparisons to previous standouts in the program. Day emphasized the physicality Henry has shown in camp as a key step in his transition.
Training camp has allowed coaches to evaluate multiple freshmen who could contribute immediately under the current eligibility rules that give players five years to play five seasons. Day has indicated several first-year players, including Henry, are positioning themselves for roles this fall.
Henry’s early commitment and subsequent development have been closely followed by fans and analysts. His presence adds depth to a unit expected to play a major role in Ohio State’s offensive plans under Day.
As practices continue, the focus remains on refining schemes and building chemistry ahead of the regular season. Day’s public praise for Henry signals confidence in the young receiver’s trajectory within the program.
The Buckeyes will continue fall camp with additional scrimmages and evaluations before settling on depth charts for the opener. Henry’s progress will remain a storyline as the team builds toward September.
