After a brief return to the franchise that drafted him, veteran quarterback Will Grier has decided to step away from the NFL. The Carolina Panthers placed him on the reserve/retired list Wednesday, bringing an end to his playing career just as training camp preparations were ramping up.

Grier, a 31-year-old native of the area, had re-signed with the Panthers on a one-year deal earlier this spring, marking a homecoming of sorts.

Originally selected by Carolina in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, he made his only regular-season appearances that rookie year, seeing action in two games.

His journey since then took him across several organizations, including stints with the Dallas Cowboys (on two separate occasions), Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots, Los Angeles Chargers, and Philadelphia Eagles.

The decision to retire comes at a pivotal time for the Panthers’ quarterback room. With Grier’s departure, the team heads into camp with three signal-callers: starter Bryce Young, experienced backup Kenny Pickett, and undrafted rookie Haynes King.

King is expected to see increased opportunities during the preseason, particularly as the team opens its exhibition schedule against the Arizona Cardinals in the Hall of Fame Game on August 6 in Canton, Ohio.

Grier’s return to Bank of America Stadium earlier this year had generated some local interest, as he participated in voluntary workouts and seemed eager to contribute once more in familiar surroundings.

Yet after weighing his options, the veteran chose to close this chapter rather than compete for a roster spot heading into the new season.

Throughout his career, Grier was known for his strong arm and competitive spirit, qualities that made him a solid depth option across multiple teams.

While his on-field opportunities were limited, his professionalism and dedication left a positive impression on those around him.

As the Panthers gear up for what promises to be an important year under Bryce Young, the focus now shifts fully to the remaining quarterbacks.

Training camp begins next week, and the team will look to build chemistry and depth behind its young starter while honoring the contributions of those, like Grier, who helped pave the way.
