Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill has assembled a high-profile legal team following his controversial encounter with Miami-Dade Police earlier this month that caught the NFL world by storm.

Hill’s team now includes an attorney who represented George Floyd’s family in their 2020 civil case, as the wide receiver aims to use his experience to spark national police reform and push for the passing of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

Hill’s original lawyer, Julius B. Collins, announced on Monday that he’ll be joined by Jeffrey A. Neiman, Stephen B. Kelly Jr., and Devon M. Jacob in handling the case.

Jacob emphasized Hill’s intent to continue the national conversation on police reform, saying, “Tyreek intends to continue the national movement for necessary police reform that George Floyd’s death started.”

Hill’s Fight for Change and Call for Accountability

The incident, which took place on Sept. 8, involved Hill being pulled out of his sports car and forcibly thrown to the ground by Miami-Dade Police officers during a routine traffic stop as he was on his way to Hard Rock Stadium.

While Hill acknowledged that his behavior wasn’t perfect during the encounter, he believes the level of force used by the officers was excessive.

One key target of Hill’s legal efforts is Miami-Dade Police officer Danny Torres, who placed his knee in Hill’s back during the incident. Collins made it clear that the legal team is demanding Officer Torres be fired, stating, “It is already clear that well before this incident, Miami-Dade County should have fired Officer Torres.”

In response to the situation, Hill expressed concern about how the incident could have turned out if he wasn’t a well-known football player. Collins echoed these sentiments, saying, “Had officers not realized that they were interacting with Tyreek Hill – a well-known, beloved, educated, and seemingly wealthy black man – this traffic stop would likely have ended with the driver in jail, in the hospital, or like George Floyd, dead.”

Hill’s Plans Moving Forward and Dialogue with Police Departments

In addition to hiring his new legal team, Hill has been actively engaged in discussions with local police chiefs to explore ways to prevent similar incidents in the future.

While addressing reporters, Hill mentioned that small steps are being taken to move forward with his case, and he’s committed to ensuring that this incident leads to broader change. “Right now, I want to do a good job of keeping that private. When everything’s happened, it’s going to happen. We’ll kind of lean on you guys to get the word out and spread the message,” Hill said.
