In a significant move during Thursday night’s NFL Draft, the Minnesota Vikings climbed one spot from the 11th to the 10th pick through a trade with the New York Jets. They used this opportunity to select Michigan’s quarterback, J.J. McCarthy, who led his team to a national championship.

Despite the high hopes pinned on him, not everyone is thrilled with the Vikings’ choice. John Middlekauff of The Volume expressed skepticism about McCarthy’s potential to excel at the professional level.

On his podcast, Middlekauff compared McCarthy to Alex Smith, suggesting that while Smith had a decent career, his success required ideal conditions and took time to develop. “A lot of these players don’t turn out as expected… we might see more players who resemble Kenny Picketts or Mac Jones rather than exceed expectations,” Middlekauff commented.

NFL NEWS & RUMORS: JJ McCarthy, Minnesota Vikings Updates

Middlekauff’s reservations stem partly from McCarthy’s collegiate background. Unlike his peers Michael Penix Jr. at Washington or Caleb Williams at USC, McCarthy wasn’t a long-term starter and didn’t frequently showcase his passing skills.

This was largely due to Michigan’s offensive strategy, which heavily favored the run, led by standout Blake Corum.

Moreover, McCarthy never surpassed 3,000 passing yards in any college season, and his role was often that of a game manager rather than a standout playmaker.

NFL NEWS & RUMORS: JJ McCarthy, Minnesota Vikings Updates

As he transitions to the NFL with the Vikings, McCarthy will be expected to connect with dynamic receivers like Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson.

The transition to the NFL will be a true test of McCarthy’s ability to adapt and elevate his game beyond what he displayed in college. It remains to be seen whether he can outperform the game-manager label and truly shine with Minnesota.
