The San Francisco 49ers have been one of the most disappointing teams in the NFL this season, getting off to a 2-3 start.

While there is still plenty of time for the 49ers to turn things around, NFL analyst Trey Wingo did reveal a rather concerning stat for the team over the first five weeks of the year.

Obviously, it’s just two games, but the fact that San Francisco has already lost more divisional games in 2024 than it lost the preceding two campaigns combined is a bit alarming.

That being said, the Niners do have some excuses to fall back on, as they have been absolutely ravaged by injuries this season and have still not seen Christian McCaffrey take the field. Not only that, but Brandon Aiyuk missed training camp due to a contract dispute.

While the Super Bowl hangover may be real for the 49ers, it’s probably a bit too early to hit the panic button, especially considering that they are about to begin getting some reinforcements.

Plus, it’s not like anyone is running away with the NFC West.

The Seattle Seahawks started out 3-0, but they have lost their last two games. The Arizona Cardinals are 2-3, and the Los Angeles Rams are straggling behind at 1-4.

We are used to seeing the Niners easily win this division, so the fact that they have been having so much difficulty early on—including a Week 5 loss to the Cardinals—is strange.

Still, smart money is on the 49ers eventually righting the ship.

The San Francisco 49ers have a pivotal divisional matchup on tap with the Seahawks on Thursday night. We’ll see if the 49ers can send a message to their NFC West rivals.
