Yankees’ Potential All-Star Trade Target Likely Off the Table

The New York Yankees feel a bit incomplete heading into the 2025 MLB season, especially given all of the injuries they have incurred recently.

One area in which the Yankees have an obvious need at third base, and while Nolan Arenado has been the common trade suggestion for New York, it does not appear that the Yanks are all that interested in taking on Arenado’s contract.

Another intriguing name that surfaced in trade speculation, however, was Minnesota Twins utility man Willi Castro, who actually made the All-Star team last season.

However, with Twins infielder Royce Lewis now hitting the injured list, Adam Weinrib of Yanks Go Yard notes theorizes that Castro is probably off the table for the Yankees.

“Now, it’s on Castro to help shoulder the burden, alongside youngsters Brooks Lee and Edouard Julien. The Twins, once overflowing with potential trade options, now need all of their ducks to cover for their own injury issues,” Weinrib wrote.

Castro is slated to earn $6.4 million this year, and for a New York squad that is ironically watching every penny it spends heading into the new season, he definitely represented a much more feasible option than Arenado, who has three years and $52 million remaining on his contract.

As of right now, the Yankees appear content to head into the 2025 campaign with Oswaldo Cabrera manning the hot corner, much like last season. Cabrera slashed .247/.296/.365 with eight home runs and 36 RBI over 326 plate appearances in 2024. He played very good defense, but his lack of offensive production is a major problem, especially in a Yanks lineup that will be missing Giancarlo Stanton for an indefinite period of time.

Not that Castro is an offensive juggernaut himself, as he posted a .717 OPS last year, but he certainly would have been an upgrade over Cabrera, who really is nothing more than a bench player.

Perhaps the Bronx Bombers will do something about their situation at third base, but with opening day approaching, it’s looking more and more like it will comprise a potential trade deadline fix.
