The New York Yankees are actively hunting for a significant upgrade behind the plate as the MLB trade deadline approaches, signaling their determination to bolster the roster for a deep postseason run.
After initial discussions with the Athletics regarding Shea Langeliers failed to gain traction, the team has shifted its focus to another intriguing option in the National League.
According to ESPN reporter Jorge Castillo, the Yankees have inquired with the Colorado Rockies about acquiring catcher Hunter Goodman.
This development comes as something of a surprise, given early indications that Colorado might prefer to hold onto their young All-Star rather than part ways during the rebuild. Castillo, however, raised the possibility of a change in approach from the Rockies.
“A two-time All-Star with tons of power and a high strikeout rate, Goodman could fetch the Rockies a haul since he has three years of club control after this season, there’s a dearth of available right-handed hitters on the market, and a few contenders could use an upgrade at catcher,” Castillo wrote. “Teams, including the New York Yankees, have inquired. The Rockies could decide to keep Goodman for their rebuild, but his value might not climb any higher.”
At just 26 years old, Goodman has emerged as one of the most potent offensive threats in baseball this season. He is currently slashing .258/.327/.563 with 31 home runs and 57 RBI through 397 plate appearances.
His slugging percentage leads the National League, and he recently turned heads by launching three home runs in a single game against the Cincinnati Reds. While his defensive skills behind the plate are considered serviceable rather than elite, his bat more than compensates for any shortcomings.
The Rockies enjoy substantial leverage in any potential negotiations. Goodman remains under team control through the 2029 season, meaning Colorado faces no immediate pressure to trade him.
His combination of power, youth, and remaining contractual years makes him an especially valuable commodity, particularly in a market short on impactful right-handed hitters. Any deal with the Yankees would likely demand a steep return, potentially headlined by top prospects such as Carlos Lagrange and either Jasson Dominguez or Spencer Jones.
For New York, the interest underscores the pressing need to improve upon the current production from Austin Wells, who has struggled mightily at the plate with a .163 batting average and .524 OPS through 70 games. Yet pursuing a midseason acquisition at catcher carries inherent risks.
Catchers must quickly familiarize themselves with an entirely new pitching staff, while pitchers simultaneously adjust to a new receiver—an adjustment that can prove challenging in the heat of a pennant race.
As the August 3 trade deadline draws nearer, the Yankees face a critical decision. Securing a player of Goodman’s caliber could provide a major offensive spark, but it would require parting with significant future talent and betting that the transition period would not disrupt their playoff preparations.
Whether the Rockies entertain serious offers or opt to retain their rising star remains to be seen, but the Yankees’ outreach has at least opened the door to what could become one of the more impactful moves of the summer.
