It is hard to imagine, but the New York Yankees could get better in the coming weeks. Their pitching staff is going to receive a huge boost in the near future from reigning Cy Young award winner, Gerrit Cole.

Dealing with a dead arm in Spring Training, Gerrit Cole was shut down back in March. He has been moving along in his rehab and building his arm back up, and New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone provided an incredible update over the weekend.

According to Boone, Gerrit Cole will be making his first rehab start on Tuesday with the Somerset Patriots of the Eastern League in Double-A. Bryan Hoch shared the update on X.

Hoch went into more detail about the outing for Tuesday. Cole is scheduled to throw 50 pitches against the Hartford Yard Goats. According to Boone, it will take at least two rehab starts before he can make his debut with the major league team.

“I try not to get ahead of myself with it,” Boone said. “Let’s just keep checking boxes, keep moving the needle. Ever since he got shut down, I feel like it’s moved in a good direction the whole way. It’s just about continuing to move toward that point.”

Gerrit Cole began throwing on May 4th and has been gradually ramping things up since. In Spring Training, he was dealing with right elbow inflammation and edema, which was leading to difficulties bouncing back between outings.

On May 30th, Gerrit Cole threw a live batting practice session at the New York Yankees complex in Florida. In that outing, he threw 43 pitches over three innings, which was his third time facing live hitters during his rehab.

Even without Gerrit Cole in the rotation, the New York Yankees pitching staff has been dominant this season. They have the lowest ERA in the league, led by the emergence of Luis Gil, the leader right now for the  American League Rookie of the Year award.
