The New York Yankees made a quiet but notable roster move on Monday, releasing right-handed pitcher Rafael Montero from their Triple-A affiliate, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.
The decision came as the club prepared to open a series against the Seattle Mariners following a mixed weekend against the Atlanta Braves, in which they took two of three games but dropped the finale 2-1.
Montero, an 11-year major league veteran, never appeared in a game for the Yankees this season. He had been working out of the RailRiders’ bullpen, posting a 5.68 ERA across 27 innings with 33 strikeouts.
Earlier in the year, visa complications during spring training had already limited his chance to compete for a big-league roster spot, and his minor-league results ultimately sealed his fate within the organization.
At 35, with his 36th birthday approaching in October, Montero carries a lengthy résumé that includes stints with the New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Seattle Mariners, Houston Astros, Atlanta Braves, and Detroit Tigers.
His most successful stretch came during five seasons in Houston, where he contributed to the Astros’ 2022 World Series championship.
That year he went 5-2 with a 2.37 ERA in 71 appearances, providing reliable late-inning work for a contending club. More recently, he split time in 2025 among the Astros, Braves, and Tigers, continuing to chase opportunities as a veteran arm.
Whether another major league team will claim Montero before the 2026 season ends remains an open question. Teams often look for experienced relief help down the stretch, particularly arms with postseason pedigree, yet his recent numbers and age may make landing a new deal more difficult.
For now, he becomes a free agent once more, hoping a new organization sees value in the skills that once helped deliver a championship ring.
Meanwhile, the Yankees themselves sit in second place in the American League East with a 66-52 record through 118 games.
They have played .500 ball over their last ten contests and hold a 29-26 mark at home.
Manager Aaron Boone’s club will look to build momentum against Seattle as the calendar turns toward the final stretch of the regular season, when every roster decision and performance can carry added weight.
